Georgia supports long-lasting peace in the region, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said earlier today while speaking about Georgia’s close relations with countries in the region and recent high-level visits.

PM Garibashvili noted that his "Peaceful Neighbourhood Initiative”, which he introduced at the 76th meeting of the UN General Assembly back in late September,  aims to develop a dialogue and restore trust between neighbours and strengthen the role of Georgia as a mediator.

As the PM noted, the implementation of a balanced policy in the region is of utmost importance for the stability and security of Georgia.

I have already had several official meetings this year, I have been to Azerbaijan twice, I have been to Armenia twice and the Prime Minister of Armenia has visited Georgia twice. I also had a very successful meeting in Turkey as well and I would like to thank President Erdogan for a special, warm welcome. Turkey is a strategic partner of Georgia and a very important player in the region, and we need to maintain, strengthen and deepen these relations,” said Garibashvili.

The PM also spoke about the importance of the involvement of the international community, the US and the EU in the local regional platform to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.

Garibashvili touched on Georgia’s diplomatic mediation and that of the US State Department between Armenia and Azerbaijan, “through which an agreement was reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia and I think we promoted a very important agreement and set a very interesting, important precedent in the region,“ he said.
