Georgia hits record high 5,068 daily cases of coronavirus amid large-scale testing

Georgia reported 5,068 new cases of coronavirus earlier today: a record-high figure since the country confirmed its first case of the virus on February 26, 2020.
Earlier this week the government announced large-scale testing of the public, about 20,000 individuals on a daily basis, to reveal new infections in a timely fashion and prevent the further spread of the virus.
Health officials said that 17,000 PCR and rapid tests were conducted yesterday.
The process will continue until February 1, 2021.
Georgia has had 152,704 cases of coronavirus since February.
126,304 of the 152,704 individuals have recovered, while 1,425 others have died.
2,336 individuals have recovered and 38 others have died of Covid-19 in the country in the past 24 hours.
24,349 individuals remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia as of today.

The new 5,068 cases were recorded in:
- Tbilisi - 1,959 cases
- Adjara - 483 cases
- Imereti - 980 cases
- Kvemo Kartli - 296 cases
- Shida Kartli - 222 cases
- Guria - 122 cases
- Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti - 408 cases
- Kakheti - 335 cases
- Mtskheta-Mtianeti - 130 cases
- Samtskhe-Javakheti - 114 cases
- Racha-Lechkhumi, Kvemo Svaneti - 19 cases
6,671 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals as of today. 1,070 of the 6,671 patients are in critical condition. 476 of the 1,070 critical patients are on artificial ventilation.
3,899 Covid-19 patients are in hotels, 1,241 individuals are in quarantine and 13,779 are at home.
51,262 individuals are in self-isolation.
More than 1,250,000 tests have been made in Georgia so far.
Treatment of a coronavirus patient in hospital costs on average 2,000 GEL which does not include investments in oxygen stocks and staff training, said Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia says that the government-imposed coronavirus restrictions until January 31 aim to ensure a normal way of living starting February 1.
Georgia has reported 4,260 new cases of coronavirus, 2,947 recoveries and 45 deaths in the past 24 hours. Georgia has had 147,636 cases of coronavirus since February 26, 2020. Since then 124,568 individuals have recovered, while 1,387 others have died. 6,561 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals as of today. 1,027 of the 6,561 patients are in critical condition. 390 of the 1,027 critical patients are on artificial ventilation.
Starting today the Georgian government will ensure 20,000 daily coronavirus tests around the country to reveal new infections and curb the spread of the virus in a timely fashion. Large-scale testing will continue until February 1, 2021. Tests conducted by private clinics and labs will be added to the 20,000 tests. Rapid tests will be actively used in the process,” said the government, adding that testing will also ensure proper hospitalisation of critical patients.
The list of sites offering coronavirus tests in Tbilisi will increase, said Head of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze.
Record-high 5,450 new coronavirus cases have been reported in Georgia over the last 24 hours amid wide-scale testing carried out throughout the country. Deputy Head of the Task Force under the Interagency Coordination Council Berdia Sichinava has announced at a news briefing today that 10,379 PCR and 7,716 rapid tests were conducted yesterday.
The United States government has donated 26,000 PCR testing kits to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) through USAID, to help Georgian medical professionals manage the coronavirus pandemic.
A taxi driver and his accomplice - both infected with coronavirus - have been fined by police for violating self-isolation rules. The Georgian Interior Ministry reported yesterday that the two individuals were fined while travelling on a car at Abashidze street in Tbilisi on December 4.
Georgia has reported 2,501 new cases of coronavirus, 3,988 recoveries and 36 deaths in the past 24 hours. 9,442 tests have been conducted in the past 24 hours. 4,360 of the 9,442 tests were rapid tests, while the remaining 5,082 were PCR tests. Georgia has had 164,776 cases of coronavirus since February. 137,499 of the 164,776 individuals have recovered, while 1,540 others have died. Archpriest David Kvlividze died of coronavirus earlier today, while archbishop Spiridon has tested positive for coronavirus. 25,911 individuals remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia as of today.
Georgia has reported 4,570 new cases, 3,045 recoveries and 43 deaths in the past 24 hours. 19,636 tests have been conducted in the past 24 hours around the country; 11,718 of the 19,636 tests were rapid tests, while the remaining 7,918 were PCR tests. Georgia has had 178,953 cases of coronavirus since February. 148,332 of the 178,953 individuals have recovered, while 1,657 others have died. 28,938 individuals remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia as of today.
Georgia has reported 2,635 new cases, 2,244 recoveries and 49 deaths in the past 24 hours. 16,870 tests have been conducted in the past 24 hours around the country (8,011 of the 16,870 tests were rapid tests, while the remaining 8,859 were PCR tests). Georgia has had 204,003 cases of coronavirus since February. 171,526 of the 201,368 individuals have recovered, while 2,002 others have died.
The government of Georgia says that several coronavirus restrictions which were scheduled to be lifted between December 24 and January 2 will not take place to preserve a ‘positive dynamic’ in curbing the spread of the virus.The government says that the restrictions imposed since November 28 have made the situation stable.“However, the rate of daily infections is still high and lifting the restrictions as was previously scheduled may have a negative influence on the general situation,” said the government.
