Lelo nominates former ruling party MP in Tbilisi constituency where other opposition parties have joint candidate

Political party Lelo has nominated former MP of the ruling Georgian Dream party Levan Koberidze in Vake constituency of Tbilisi which was a surprise for Elene Khoshtaria – the joint opposition candidate in the constituency in the October parliamentary elections.
It was a surprise for me. However, the step will not shade my attitude to Lelo as I think that Lelo’s success is important for the opposition bloc and future diversity in governance,” Khoshtaria wrote on her Facebook page.
Lelo, which was founded by co-founders of TBC Bank Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze, says that only Koberidze is capable of defeating the ruling party candidate in the constituency. The party has nominated 25 of 30 majoritarian candidates.

The elections in the autumn will be held in a different manner, with 120 MPs elected per the party-list based electoral system and the remaining 30 per the majoritarian electoral model.
Lelo’s founders are now each on 700,000 GEL bail for the alleged embezzlement of 16 million USD.
The ruling Georgian Dream party has nominated all 30 of its majoritarian candidates for the upcoming October parliamentary elections, both for the eight constituencies of the capital Tbilisi and the regions. The elections in the autumn will be held in a different manner, with 120 MPs elected per the party-list based electoral system and the remaining 30 per the majoritarian electoral model. Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said that the elections will be held ‘in full line with democratic standards and Georgian Dream will celebrate a victory in a fair fight.’
One of Georgia’s top bankers, Mamuka Khazaradze, who has recently been charged in a high-profile money laundering case, has officially launched a new civic movement in Georgia’s coastal town of Anaklia, located near the Russian-occupied region of Abkhazia.
A Tbilisi City Court has set 700, 000 GEL bail each for TBC Bank co-founders Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze. They also have been banned from leaving the country without the consent of the prosecutors. The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office demanded one million GEL bail from each as a restraining measure.
MP Levan Koberidze left the Georgian Dream ruling party after the parliament approved the bill on the selection and appointment of Supreme Court judges with its third and final reading earlier today. Koberidze said that the bill drafted by the ruling party MPs fails to ensure transparency in the selection and appointment procedures of judges.
The ruling party will keep Giorgi Gakharia as its candidate for prime minister because of his high level of professionalism and patriotism, as well as his excellent leadership and management skills. Archil Talakvadze will again serve as the parliament speaker as well.
About 10 members of the ruling Georgia Dream party have been injured and two of them are in critical condition after a confrontation with United National Movement members in the village of Nakhiduri of Bolnisi yesterday, says majoritarian candidate of the Georgian Dream for Bolnisi-Dmanisi-Tetritskaro-Tsalka Gogi Meshveliani.
Opposition party European Georgia has presented its party list for the 2020 parliamentary elections. Leader of the party Davit Bakradze said their representatives in the list are not distributed consecutively, which means that voters themselves decide who enters the parliament.
An incident took place near the Marneuli District Election Commission between supporters of the ruling Georgian Dream and opposition United National Movement (UNM) parties today. The commission chairman said a group of people tried to break into the commission building and 'obstruct their work', after which one of the commission members was physically assaulted.
Opposition party European Georgia says it will not form a coalition with the ruling Georgian Dream party and also will not support ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili as a Prime Minister.
