Blueberry orchards will be planted on 6 hectares in Senaki, a town in Georgia’s Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, within the state-run project ‘Plant the Future’, aiming to stimulate the region’s agricultural industry.
Agricultural cooperative Agrotema received state financing worth 100,000 GEL (about $37,313/€32,848) to plant the blueberry orchards in Senaki.
The cooperative plans to expand the blueberry orchards and plant another 4 hectares so in total 10ha will be planted in the future.
About 50 people are employed at planting works.
Georgian blueberries are one of the most promising products that have future on the international markets.
The export of Georgian blueberries has started to Dubai, Qatar and Europe.
As for the ‘Plant the future’ project, it was launched in 2015 and aims to help farmers produce high quality products that can compete with imported products on the local market. At the same time this should increase the export potential of Georgia’s agricultural products.
