Majoritarian candidates from the ruling party Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia (GDDG) have won 48 out of 50 majoritarian districts, latest preliminary results show.

The country's main opposition party United National Movement (UNM) had no winning candidate at any of the 50 districts where a runoff vote was taking place.

Georgia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has counted almost all votes cast in the second round of the Parliamentary Elections 2016. The agency released latest preliminary results and noted these were unlikely to change.

The two districts where a GDDG candidate did not win were:

  • #43 district in Khashuri, central Georgia, where the winner was Industrials party candidate Simon Nozadze;
  • #1 district in Mtatsminda, Tbilisi, where the winner was independent candidate Salome Zurabishvili. In this district GDDG did not have a candidate and the party supported Zurabishvili.

The election runoff held on October 30 decided the outcome of one third of the total seats in the 150 seat unicameral Parliament of Georgia.

The second round of Georgia’s Parliamentary Elections was held in 50 of Georgia’s 73 election districts yesterday.

A second round of vote was needed in these districts as no majoritarian candidates gained enough votes to enter Parliament in the first election on October 8.

To enter Parliament candidates needed to win at least 50 percent of all votes in their respective voting district.
