Georgian PM says Gov’t’s “main task” to maintain, further strengthen ties with Germany

He also noted the country was in an “unfair situation” when accession talks had been already opened with Ukraine and Moldova, while Georgia was “seriously ahead” of both countries, and added he expected this injustice would be “effectively eliminated” in December. Photo: Government Administration

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday said his Government’s “main task” was to maintain and further strengthen cooperation that exists between the two countries.

In his comments to the media Kobakhidze said Georgia had “extraordinary” relations with Germany that had “positive dynamics”.

The PM noted he and his Government delegation had “remarkable” meetings in Berlin during the day with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Bärbel Bas, the President of the German Bundestag, and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany, with the meetings discussing bilateral relations.

He added the meetings had discussed “all aspects of cooperation” political, economic, education and culture.

Kobakhidze said a decision would be made in December 2024 for opening European Union accession talks with Georgia, and noted he expected a “positive decision” to be made and expressed his hope the country would have support from Germany and the European Council.

You all remember that in June 2022, an unjust decision [the European Council granted candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, recognised Georgia's “European perspective”] was made, which a number of organisations tried to use to organise a revolution in the country. We hope that processes will not develop in such a direction this year and we hope that a fair decision will be made”, he added.

He also noted the country was in an “unfair situation” when accession talks had been already opened with Ukraine and Moldova, while Georgia was “seriously ahead” of both countries, and added he expected this injustice would be “effectively eliminated” in December.
