Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, on Thursday said the body had granted the European Union membership candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, and was ready to grant the same status to Georgia once the outstanding priorities outlined by the European Commission were addressed by the Georgian Government.
Michel said the body was recognising the “European perspective” of the country, and congratulated Georgia in his tweet on the “historic moment”.

It strengthens Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, in the face of Russian imperialism.
And it strengthens the EU.
Because it shows once again to the world that we are united and strong in the face of external threats.
In comments from the Georgian side, Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili “sincerely” congratulated Ukraine and Moldova with being granted the status, and expressed his Government’s gratitude in receiving the “European perspective”.
