Gitanas Nausėda, the Lithuanian President, on Thursday said his Government was “strongly motivated” to “politically support” Georgia obtaining the European Union membership candidate status later this year.

Speaking on the sidelines of the third European Political Community Summit in Spain, the official highlighted the importance to “help our friends from the Eastern Partnership countries to join the bloc and introduce democratic rules of the game in the region”.

Nausėda noted his office was “closely observing” the situation in Georgia, and was “really optimistic” as saw the “strong will” of the country’s population to integrate into the EU.

I think your politicians and the Government have a strong mandate to do their utmost to bring Georgia closer to the EU”, said the President.

The European Commission is scheduled to release its report on Georgia’s meeting the conditions to obtain the status this month, which will be used by the European Council in December to decide on the country’s status.

Georgia officially applied for EU membership in March 2022, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and was granted a European perspective and a reform agenda for obtaining the bloc’s candidacy.
