Davit Matikashvili, an MP for the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday said he hoped for “solid support” from the Baltic countries on granting Georgia the European Union membership candidate status in December.
In his address at the 42nd session of the Baltic Assembly and the Baltic Council in Estonia’s capital city of Tallinn, Matikashvili welcomed the European Commission’s recommendation to the European Council to grant Georgia the candidate status, expressing hope the Council would also make “a positive decision” on Georgia’s EU candidacy next month.

He briefed the members of the Baltic Parliamentary Assembly on the ongoing reforms in Georgia and noted that despite the difficult political and security situation in the region, the country managed to have economic growth and “tangible results” in various directions, the Parliament press office said.
Historically friendly relations between Georgia and the Baltic states were also emphasised by the MP, who thanked the representatives of the states for their unwavering support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
At the session, attended by parliamentary delegations of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, as well as Parliament speakers, foreign ministers, and other high officials from European countries and international organisations, Matikashvili emphasised Georgia’s political and humanitarian support to Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing military invasion of Ukraine.
