Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Wednesday reaffirmed his Government’s support for Ukraine amid the Russian invasion, and pledged to vote for a corresponding resolution, in his address to the 11th emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The diplomat condemned Russia’s ongoing aggression against Kyiv and stressed the war waged by the Kremlin was an “attack on the entire international order” and “violates the architecture of global peace and security”, in the event dedicated to the anniversary of the start of the war, Georgian foreign office said.
Pointing to “severe humanitarian consequences, casualties and mass displacement of the people” in the conflict, the official suggested the restoration of peace was possible “only in the conditions of strong responsibility, through the observance of the basic principles of the UN by its member states”.

Emphasising the organisation's role in maintaining peace in the face of “significant global challenges”, the FM pledged support for the resolution sponsored by some 60 countries that called for a “just and lasting peace in Ukraine in line with the principles of the UN Charter”.
He said the draft resolution - expected to be voted on later on Thursday - had responded to ensuring “basic values of the UN, beyond the protection of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine”.
Ukraine needs peace, our countries and people need peace. The world needs peace. We are facing global challenges of unprecedented scale such as climate change, natural disasters, terrorism. Combating these challenges requires our joint efforts, our cooperation. The UN can do a lot for it. We must do this for our children, for our future generations", said Darchiashvili.
Highlighting his country’s support for Ukraine in “all international platforms” and humanitarian assistance provided since the outbreak of hostilities on February 24 of the past year, the Minister also highlighted Russia’s occupation of Georgian territories and its illegal activities in and adjacent to the occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
Almost 15 years have passed since Russia's full-scale aggression against Georgia and the occupation of 20 percent of our territories, which grossly violates the principles of the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act and the Paris Charter", Darchiashvili told the meeting.
He emphasised the Georgian Government's commitment to peaceful resolution of the conflicts and the importance of joint efforts of the international community in achieving the goal.
