The “effective” cooperation between Georgian state institutions and the United Nations, and human rights conditions in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) were discussed on Monday between Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Held on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations Human Rights Council meeting, the meeting highlighted the “significant role” of the High Commissioner in maintaining the issue of human rights protection in Georgia's occupied regions on the international agenda, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The “great importance” of the report on the Council’s cooperation with Georgia, adopted last year and aiming to draw attention to the difficult human rights situation in the occupied regions, was also pointed out.
The parties also paid “particular attention” to Georgia’s membership priorities, including the protection of the rights of women, children, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities and internally displaced persons, as well as the furthering of the environmental dimension of human rights. The aspects of the work of state institutions on the topics were “positively evaluated” in the discussion, the ministry added.
Scheduled to run through Saturday, the agenda for the Human Rights Council session involves discussion on matters ranging from the human rights situation in Ukraine to more general discussions and annual reviews of the body.
