Georgia 43rd among 196 countries in Global Corruption Index, says Gov’t

The Government of Georgia on Thursday said the country had been ranked 43rd put of 196 countries in the Global Corruption Index published by the Swiss risk management company Global Risk Profile.
The Government Administration said Georgia had been promoted by two places and included in the top 25 percent of the Index.
In the Black Sea region, [South] Caucasus and Central Asia, Georgia took the first place - with the status of ‘low level of corruption’. Georgia is the only country in the mentioned region that has this status”, the Administration added.
In freedom from corruption qualification Georgia surpassed all European Union candidate countries and eight member states of the EU and NATO, it also pointed out.
Georgian Infrastructure Minister Irakli Karseladze on Thursday told the country’s Parliament claims by a part of the domestic opposition on his office being involved in corruption and embezzlement could not be proven by those making the allegations “because there is no such thing”.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday said the latest Rule of Law Index by the World Justice Project, which ranked Georgia “ahead of several” European Union and NATO member countries was “an answer to all speculations and the long-standing disinformation” alleging “problems in the rule of law”.
Georgian Deputy Finance Minister Mikheil Dundua on Monday said Georgia’s ranking in the latest Global Competitiveness Report, which placed the country in 11th place in Europe in corruption control, proved the country was “developing in the right direction”.
Revaz Javelidze, the Head of the Government Administration, on Monday highlighted Georgia’s selection in 11th place in Europe in corruption control in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report, and credited the outcome with “correct and effective” Government reforms.
Paweł Herczyński, the European Union Ambassador to Georgia, on Saturday said the European Commission’s “historic” recommendation, last month, to grant the country the EU membership candidate status was an “acknowledgement” of Georgia’s progress in the fight against corruption.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday asserted the country had witnessed a “fundamental transformation” in terms of democracy and human rights since 2012, when the current administration assumed office.
Georgian Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili on Wednesday discussed recent reforms for combating corruption during a meeting with Richard Nephew, the Coordinator of the United States Department of State on Global Anti-Corruption.

Georgia has been ranked 13th worldwide and among the top 10 states in Europe by low bribery incidence, while also being listed as the world leader in freedom from bribery while obtaining government contracts, the Administration of the Government said on Monday.
