Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday asserted the country had witnessed a “fundamental transformation” in terms of democracy and human rights since 2012, when the current administration assumed office.

In his press comments, the lawmaker stressed the transformation had been reflected in “all objective indexes” published by international organisations over the years.

Citing Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s end-of-year report on Monday, Kobakhidze said the head of the Government had focused on “diverse” international surveys, including those on democratic development, economy and combating corruption.

Our nation consistently ranks ahead in the [South Caucasus] region and, in many instances, surpasses several European Union member countries”, the party official said.

He credited the “positive transformation” to the “democratic change” that occurred in October 2012, when the Georgian Dream coalition founded by Bidzina Ivanishvili defeated the nine-year-rule of the then President Mikheil Saakashvili’s United National Movement, with the outcome.
