Georgian Infrastructure Minister Irakli Karseladze featured in the 27th edition of the World Road Congress in Prague this week, with the event aimed at discussing the trends and challenges of road infrastructure and transport around the world, the Infrastructure Ministry said on Tuesday.

The Ministry said a ministerial meeting was held within the congress, organised by the World Road Association, on important and topical issues of road infrastructure development featuring ministers of infrastructure and transport of different countries.

The Georgian Infrastructure Minister addressed the meeting and provided information on ongoing and implemented "important projects" in Georgia related to the development of roads, and noted “unprecedented and large-scale projects” were underway for the development of the country's road network - including mountain roads and international highway corridors - both in terms of engineering and importance.

Karseladze also highlighted the importance of the Middle Corridor - a transportation route network connecting China with Europe through the South Caucasus region - and the planned development within which the projects implemented in Georgia prepared the transport Corridor to meet the increased traffic flows.

He pointed out the country’s East-West International Highway would cut travel time in half once completed, “greatly enhancing the highway's attractiveness and nearly tripling its capacity” under conditions that meet contemporary international standards.

The Minister also informed participants of the ministerial meeting about measures and projects provided for the sustainable development of infrastructure under the 10-year Vision 2030 Development Strategy of the Government.

The Congress, which seeks to share experience in road infrastructure and road transport, is hosted every four years in a member country, with this year's event running between Monday and Friday in Prague.

The Georgian Infrastructure Minister is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings as part of his working visit, the Ministry said.
