Georgian fencer Sandro Bazadze became the first Georgian athlete to win a gold medal at the International Fencing Federation’s Sabre Grand Prix on Sunday, after defeating his Italian rival Luigi Samele in the final.
The 29-year-old won the final, hosted in Tunis, against the 35-year-old three-time team European champion with a score 15:8.
The result also means the Georgian now tops season rankings with 233.000 points, up from placing second among athletes last year and fifth in the 2020-2021 season.
