Sandro Bazadze claims bronze, top career ranking at Fencing World Championships

Georgian fencer Sandro Bazadze won a bronze medal at Fencing World Championships in Cairo on Monday, with the result placing the 28-year-old second in the international rankings.

Bazadze conceded his semifinal to Hungary ‘s Áron Szilágyi, the eventual winner of the sabre category at the event, with a score 11:15.

The Georgian athlete is now listed second in the International Fencing Federation ranking in the category, marking the highest position in his career. He was previously ranked second in the junior category for sabre.

Bazadze earned the gold medal at the World Cup event in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi earlier this year, and also claimed a bronze in a World Cup competition in Le Caire, Egypt. He scored two bronze medals from the 2021 World Cup competitions in Budapest and Madrid.  

He also earned his first title of the European Champion last month, after winning the European Fencing Championships in Antalya.
