Givi Mikanadze, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday said the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe was “always an important platform” for the Georgian Parliamentary delegation to voice positions “most important for the country”.
In his remarks, Mikanadze noted the spring session of the Assembly would focus on “urgent issues” facing the European continent in terms of human rights protection.
It is important that the Georgian Parliamentary delegation will meet with members of the Monitoring Committee of the Council of Europe responsible for preparing reports on Georgia. Information will be exchanged with them regarding reforms that are implemented in the format of [the European Union] recommendations [for Georgia to obtain its membership candidate status] and are actually in the final phase”, Mikanadze said.
“It is also very important that debates will take place. The Council of Europe is preparing for the Reykjavík summit to be held in May. A special debate will be held for this session, which will especially concern the issue of the impact of Russia's aggression in Ukraine on the European continent”, the Georgian MP continued.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, is part of the Georgian Parliamentary delegation involved in the spring plenary session of the PACE in Strasbourg between Monday and Friday.
The session will be addressed by Dunja Mijatović, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe.
