Givi Mikanadze, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, was on Tuesday elected the Chair of the Sub-Committee on the Implementation of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights of the Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Elected by a majority of votes, Mikanadze will lead the Sub-Committee after becoming its member this year, and following his time in the Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee since 2021.
The latter chose Mikanadze as its Rapporteur on the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on prisoners in European prisons in 2021.
A draft resolution on the topic was subsequently adopted by the Standing Committee of the Council of Europe with a majority of votes.
The European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council on Monday confirmed Georgia had made “significant progress” in “many key reforms” carried out in the country’s efforts for integration into the bloc, and highlighted the roles of rule of law, human rights, media, civil society and independent state institutions as “important elements” for each country aspiring to join the bloc.
Oliver Varhelyi, the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, on Monday said the European Union “fully supports” Georgia's efforts to strengthen stability against the backdrop of the challenging situation created for the security in the Black Sea region.
Givi Mikanadze, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday said the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe was “always an important platform” for the Georgian Parliamentary delegation to voice positions “most important for the country”.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, together with the Georgian Parliamentary delegation, will participate in the Spring plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, taking place in Strasbourg between April 24-28.
Georgian Vice Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze on Tuesday called on the European Union to make a “bold political decision” on granting Georgia its membership candidate status by the end of this year, saying the outcome could prevent security threats to the country and the whole European security.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday hailed the “friendly” meeting with the Co-Rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, where the Georgian side had briefed the speakers on the progress achieved by the country in fulfilling the 12 conditions set for granting the country the EU membership candidate status.
Givi Mikanadze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee, has been re-elected as the Chair of the Sub-Committee on the Implementation of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights of the Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
