Georgia has always been a good partner in complying with international sanctions, Kelly Degnan, the United States Ambassador to Georgia, told journalists on Thursday.

In her comments to the media on the Georgian Government’s stance not to join the sanctions against Russia after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine, Degnan underlined there had been no expectation for it to come up with bilateral sanctions.

Bilateral sanctions are for Georgia’s Government to decide. What is expected of every country that is standing against this Russian aggression is that there will be compliance with the international sanctions’ regime. Georgia has always been a good partner in complying with international sanctions,” the Ambassador said.

Degnan stressed it was important to understand Georgia, like most other countries, would be complying with international sanctions to an extent it could.

The key is here we are all sending a unified message of support to Ukraine and one of the ways to do so is complying with international sanctions’ regime,” Degnan concluded in her comments.

On Wednesday, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party head Irakli Kobakhidze said the Georgian Government would not be able to “harm” Russia by imposing economic sanctions, but would put its own country and population “under the heaviest blow”.
