Tbilisi’s Melikishvili Avenue reopens after 6-month renovation

Tbilisi City Hall on Monday announced the completion of the renovation of Melikishvili Avenue, one of the major transport arteries of Georgia’s capital, following a six-month effort for replacing and updating infrastructure on the location.

The body said about six kilometres of underground communications and the surface of the four-lane road had been “fully renovated” in the works.

A new drainage system, underground bins and modern LED lights have been set up at the location, with new bus stops, bus lines and bicycle lanes also arranged within the project that started in June.

Infrastructure was renovated not only for transport but also for pedestrians and people with disabilities, the city authority added, with the setting up of traffic islands, new waiting areas and zebra crossings.

The renovation is a latest effort in City Hall’s initiatives over the recent years for updating infrastructure on major streets in the capital.
