Tbilisi City Hall will redesign 12 road junctions in the capital to ensure “safe and sustainable” traffic in the city, Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced on Wednesday.

The works will aim to ensure “safe movement” of pedestrians and solve interruptions in operations of public transport on 12 “problematic junctions” throughout the city.

Set to be launched with a rework of the intersection of Beliashvili and Balanchine streets in Didube district on Wednesday, the efforts will expand sidewalks, set up pedestrian ramps and renovate nearby recreational and public spaces.

The works will result in restriction of traffic between Mindeli Bridge and the Balanchine-Beliashvili intersection until April 1.

Further renovations will be started on Saturday and involve Tavkhelidze Street, Kazbegi Avenue and Zhvania Square of the Saburtalo district.

Kaladze said the redesign would address both vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement on Zhvania Square, with a focus on public transport users to enable their “comfortable commute and switching between transport routes”.
