Georgian president Salome Zourabichvili on Tuesday said Georgia and Romania had “extensive experience” of Russian imperial and Soviet policy and both countries knew “what aggression and occupation” meant.

In her remarks as part of her official visit to Romania, Zourabichvili once again condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine and noted what was happening in the country was “unacceptable”.

[R]omania is the country that has the longest border with Ukraine among EU member states. We are even closer to this conflict. We completely sympathise with the Ukrainian people. What is happening in the Ukrainian cities is completely unacceptable to the civilised world”, Zourabichvili said.

“Georgia and Romania have extensive experience of Russian imperial and Soviet policy - we know what aggression and occupation mean. We know what Russia is capable of doing - that is to move this aggression to a new dimension”, she noted.

What is being heard in terms of nuclear security, what is happening in our [Russian] occupied territories, where Russia is also launching a mobilisation - all this is a continuation of the brutal aggression that is unacceptable”, she continued.

The Georgian president stressed “solidarity” was the “main weapon” against Russia in the reality of the conflict.

I want to express the full solidarity of the Georgian people to the Ukrainian people. We know how difficult their situation is today. Georgia was and is ready to show solidarity [for Ukraine]”, the official added.

“We welcome the efforts of the European Union and the United States to help Ukraine in every possible way in this self-sacrificing struggle, which must undoubtedly end in [Ukraine’s] victory. This is where our peace and independence is decided”, Zourabichvili concluded in her comments.
