Georgian defence minister, Armenian ambassador discuss cooperation

Relations and cooperation between Georgia and Armenia were discussed on Monday in a meeting between the Georgian defence minister Juansher Burchuladze and Ashot Smbatyan, the newly appointed Armenian ambassador to Georgia.
The meeting noted the Georgian government’s support for a “balanced policy” promoting stability in the South Caucasus region, the Georgian defence ministry said.
The officials reviewed current issues and future plans of bilateral cooperation between the defence bodies of the two states.
Smbatyan was appointed as the ambassador to Georgia in early September.
Georgian president Salome Zourabichvili on Thursday condemned the “dangerous escalation” between Armenia and Azerbaijan, following the latest flare-up in hostilities between the two countries over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region this week.
Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili said, on Wednesday, at a joint press conference with Germany’s chancellor Olaf Scholz, that he hoped Armenia and Azerbaijan would soon return to the “path of dialogue”, noting Georgian government was observing the ongoing events in the neighbourhood with “great concern”. Garibashvili emphasised Armenia and Azerbaijan have been friendly countries for Georgia and what was “happening” between them was “unacceptable”.
