Georgian Defence Minister, Armenian PM discuss security challenges, cooperation

Georgian Defence Minister Juansher Burchuladze and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Saturday discussed the security environment and challenges in the South Caucasus region and in the world.

The officials highlighted Georgia’s readiness to direct efforts towards peaceful development of the region within the Government’s Peaceful Neighbourhood Initiative.

At the meeting, the sides also reviewed the dynamics and prospects of defence cooperation between Georgia and Armenia, the Defence Ministry said.

The European Commission’s recommendation to the European Council to grant Georgia the European Union membership candidate status was also pointed out by the officials, with Burchuladze noting that Georgia was actively working to fulfil the EU recommendations in the future.

The conversation also touched on the issues of cooperation between the EU and Georgia in the direction of security and defence policy in various formats.

Within the framework of the visit to Armenia, Burchuladze also met with his Armenian counterpart Suren Papikyan and signed a bilateral cooperation deal.
