Strengthening of existing ties and cooperation in various directions between Georgia and Germany was on top of the agenda of the meeting of Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili and president of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on Wednesday.
At the meeting, the PM gave a particular mention to the “outstanding political support” for Georgia by Germany and Steinmeier personally, the Georgian government administration said. The two officials noted the “reliable and valuable” partnership of the countries, which they said was based on “long-standing ties and common values”. They also noted Germany's “important role” in the success of Georgia's Euro-Atlantic integration process.

The sides emphasised Germany's practical support of Georgia, ensured not only through the German government but also by institutions and the private sector. The officials also discussed joint steps to help German business become more interested in the economic and investment potential of Georgia, with Garibashvili noting the role of the KfW Development Bank, the German Society for International Cooperation and other agencies in the development of his country.

The parties also discussed the security situation in the Black Sea region and in the occupied territories of Georgia, with the PM welcoming Germany’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, as well as efforts of the German government to ensure a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

A programme supporting Georgia’s sustainable and inclusive growth, balanced territorial development and good governance has been launched with the financial support of the European Union and the German Government, with the project worth €9.5 million.
