French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday extended his congratulations to the Georgian people on the occasion of Independence Day and wished them “happiness, prosperity and peace.”
In letter to his counterpart Salome Zourabichvili, Macron evoked the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and pointed out by supporting the Ukrainian people through the welcoming of refugees and provision of humanitarian aid, Georgians had demonstrated their “full and complete adherence” to the values that “are so dear to us.”
Georgia's successive votes at the United Nations in favour of resolutions demanding an immediate end to the war in Ukraine, calling on Russia to cease all attacks against civilians and finally excluding it from the Human Rights Council, sent a very important signal,” the French president said.
In his message, Macron also reaffirmed France’s “unwavering attachment” to the sovereignty of Georgia, stressing his country would remain “vigilant” about the situation in the Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions.
