World, Olympic Champion Lasha Talakhadze named European Weightlifter of the Year

Georgia’s Weightlifting World Champion, Olympic Champion and record-breaking athlete Lasha Talakhadze was named the European Weightlifting Federation’s Weightlifter of the Year after receiving 4,750 votes in an online poll run by the EWF.

The results of the survey will lead to an awards event during the opening ceremony of the anniversary 100th Edition of the European Senior Championships on May 27 in Tirana, Albania.

In the poll, Loredana Toma, the Romanian triple Senior Continental Champion and record breaker in snatch in the 64 kg category in last year’s championship, earned the Female Weightlifter of the Year title with 1,629 votes.

Talakhadze earned his latest Olympic Champion’s title last year in Tokyo, where he was the co-flag bearer of the Georgian flag at the opening ceremony.

In 2020, he claimed his third straight Best Male Lifter title in an International Weightlifting Federation ranking.

He is also the recipient of the Presidential Order of Excellence of Georgia for his achievements at the 2016 Olympic Games, and earned Georgia’s Sportsperson of the Year titles in 2017, 2018 and 2021.
