The process of Georgia's NATO integration and the current security challenges in the Black Sea region were discussed between Irakli Garibashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia, and Javier Colomina, the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, on Wednesday.

The parties underlined Georgia's significant progress on the path to membership in the alliance and the successfully implemented reforms in the process. The two sides also noted NATO's role in strengthening overall Euro-Atlantic security and stability and highlighted the upcoming Madrid Summit of the organisation, the Government Administration said.

The challenges in the Russian-occupied territories of Georgia and the difficult humanitarian situation in the regions were also reviewed, with Colomina reaffirming NATO’s support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The two officials also stressed the security challenges created in the Black Sea region as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Garibashvili reiterated his Government’s solidarity with Ukraine and the humanitarian assistance and support provided to the country in the wake of the invasion.

Noting the “crucial role” of the international community with regard to reactions to the conflict, the PM also raised the need for “effective steps” to end the war as soon as possible.

As part of his Georgian visit, Colomina also met with the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili, members of ruling Georgian Dream party and a part of the parliamentary opposition on Wednesday.
