A €1.3 million twinning project on road safety has come into effect in Georgia under the European Union (EU) assistance, the Economy Ministry announced on Thursday.
The project supporting the Establishment of Comprehensive Road Safety Database and Further Improvement of Road Safety Management in Georgia aims to contribute to the establishment of European practices in the field.
The successful implementation of the project would have a “positive impact” on the process of overcoming the challenges in terms of road safety in Georgia, Deputy Economy Minister, Guram Guramishvili said.
During the first meeting of the project management committee held on Thursday, it was also mentioned the twinning project sought to align Georgia with the EU standards and regulations and strengthen the regulatory environment in this area.
As part of the Association Agreement signed in 2014 between Georgia and the EU, the project will also focus on improving the traffic accident data collection and analysis-based approaches at the institutional level.
Development of an effective road safety management system, establishment of a National Trauma Registry and an effective data management system, and strengthening of the capacity of national agencies working in the field of road safety are also part of the project’s objectives.

The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the US (INL) has provided equipment for road safety insurance to the Patrol Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.
