Georgian Deputy Economy Minister Guram Guramishvili on Tuesday said road accidents across Georgia had decreased by 6.7 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year.

He also said the number of injuries in accidents decreased by 2.4 percent year-on-year, while the number of fatalities went down by 4.2 percent.

However, the figures still remain significantly high, which is a challenge for the country”, Guramishvili said at a session of the Interdepartmental Road Safety Commission.

The Deputy Minister also said reducing the number of deaths and injuries in road accidents was one of the “important factors” for the country's economic growth.

[I]t leads to extension of healthy life years and increase of working capacity, which is an important factor in the development of human capital. This has a positive impact on the country's economic well-being”, he said.

The session discussed priority areas provided by the 2022-2023 action plan for road safety, including the progress of the European Union’s TWINNING project, which concerns the establishment of a unified road safety database and support for the further improvement of road safety management in Georgia.
