2020 data: number of marriages decreases 29.7%, number of divorces down 31.8% y/y

In total 16,359 marriages were registered in 2020, showing a 29.7% decrease year-on-year, while the number of divorces equalled 7,643 decreasing by 31.8% compared to the previous year, says the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
The average age of marriage for women was 28 and 30 for men.
The highest number of marriages were registered in:
- Tbilisi - 5,008 marriages
- Adjara - 1,761 marriages
- Kvemo Kartli - 1,740 marriages
The highest number of divorces were registered in:
- Tbilisi - 2,894 divorces
- Imereti - 1,316 divorces
- Kvemo Kartli - 705 divorces
Births
The number of live births equalled 46,520 in 2020 of which 24,289 were boys and 22,231 girls. The number of live births decreased 3.7% year-on-year.
In 2020, the largest number of live births was recorded in Tbilisi (15,271) while the smallest was recorded in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti Region (259).
The share of births for women aged less than 25 declined from 30% to 28.4%, while increased for women aged 40 years and older (from 3.8% to 4.4%), and women aged 25-39 (from 66.1% to 67.2%).
Deaths
In 2020, the number of deaths increased by 8.3% in annual terms and totalled 50,537.
The largest number of deaths was recorded in Tbilisi (13,878) while the smallest – in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti Region (764).
According to the 2020 data, infant mortality rate (per 1,000 live births) equalled 7.9% while the under five mortality rate totalled 9.3%.
The Georgian Interior Ministry launched investigations into 175 cases of early marriages in 2019, just five cases less than in 2018.
The Georgian National Statistics Office has announced that the number of marriages last year decreased by 5.6 percent compared to 2016, while 7.2 percent more couples divorced in 2017 than in 2016.
Georgia’s population was 3,729,600 people as of 1 January 2018, says the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
The analyses says that according to 2010-2014 the ratio of newborn baby girls to baby boys in Georgia is 100 to 109 on average, while the maximum normal biological level of sex ratio at birth can be 100/106. The skewed sex ratio considerably increases in case of the third child or more and reaches 100/140.

In total 2,587 people died from Covid-19 in 2020, which accounted for more than five per cent of total deaths in Georgia. The number of deaths has exceeded the number of births in Georgia in the first six months of 2021 by 3,982. Statistics published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) show that 21,839 people were born and 25,821 died in the country in January-June 2021. Geostat said that a population increase was only registered in two regions: Adjara (717) and Kvemo Kartli (195).
The next national census in Georgia will be held in 2024, the Governmental Coordination Commission for Census of Georgia announced on Monday.
