Less marriages, more divorces in 2017

The Georgian National Statistics Office has announced that the number of marriages last year decreased by 5.6 percent compared to 2016, while 7.2 percent more couples divorced in 2017 than in 2016.
The average age for marriage for women was 27 and 30 for men.
Based on the latest figures published today, 23,684 marriages were registered in Georgia in 2017.
Out of that figure:
- 6,984 marriages were registered in Tbilisi.
- 2,548 in Adjara region, in the country’s west.
- 647 in Guria, in the west of the country.
- 3,850 in Imereti region, in the west of the country.
- 1,744 in Kakheti region, in the country’s east.
- 475 in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, in the east of the country.
- 211 in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, in the west of the country.
- 2,101 in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, in the country’s west.
- 993 in Samtskhe-Javakheti, in the country’s east.
- 2,617 in Kvemo Kartli, in the country’s east.
- 1,514 in Shida Kartli, in the country’s east.
The number of divorces amounted to 10,222 in 2017.
The President of Georgia says no referendum will take place in Georgia to define marriage in the Georgian Constitution as a union of a man and a woman.
More than 2,500 cases of domestic violence were reported in Georgia last year, there were more than two dozen cases of murder or attempted murder of females and hundreds of cases of underage marriage, said the Public Defender in his annual report to Parliament.
The old fashioned norm of arranged or forced marriages could soon become a illegal if changes to Georgian law are approved, resulting in a maximum penalty of four years imprisonment.
The topic of family and its status was discussed at the State Constitutional Commission session today.
The Georgian Interior Ministry has launched an information campaign against child marriage. The presentation of the campaign was held at Rooms Hotel today, where Deputy Interior Minister Natia Mezvrishvili called on the public to immediately inform police of cases of early marriage.
The Georgian Interior Ministry reports that they launched investigations into 180 cases of early marriage last year, adding that law enforces were informed regarding the incidents only several months after they took place on average.
The Georgian Interior Ministry launched investigations into 175 cases of early marriages in 2019, just five cases less than in 2018.
In total 16,359 marriages were registered in 2020, showing a 29.7% decrease year-on-year, while the number of divorces equalled 7,643 decreasing by 31.8% compared to the previous year, says the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
