Georgia’s population exceeds 3.5 mln as of January 2018

Georgia’s population was 3,729,600 people as of 1 January 2018, says the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Georgia's urban area is still more populated than rural. 58.3 per cent (2,174,800 people) of the total population live in the urban area and 41.7 per cent (1,554,800 people) in rural areas, said Geostat

How many people live in Georgia’s regions?

  • Imereti – 507,000 people
  • Kvemo Kartli – 432,300 people
  • Adjara Autonomous Region – 346,300 people
  • Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti – 320,800 people
  • Kakheti – 314,700 people
  • Shida Kartli – 259,300 people
  • Samtskhe-Javakheti – 155,900 people
  • Guria – 110,500 people
  • Mtsketa-Mtianeti – 93,900 people
  • Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti – 30,200 people

Georgia’s population by age and sex:

There are more women in Georgia than men. The data revealed that 1,938,100 women lived in Georgia as of January 2018 and 1,791,600 men.

Meanwhile, the latest data showed people aged 0-14 made up 20 per cent of the total population, while the age group of 15-64 made up 65.4 per cent. As for people aged 65 or more they made up 14.6 per cent of the total population.

The median age of population was 37 years in the reporting period. For women the median age was 40 years and for men – 35 years. 

Migration

There were 85,451 emigrants and 83,239 immigrants in 2017, said Geostat.

This data does not include information about population living in Georgia’s breakaway regions.
