Georgia’s population has slightly increased, reaching 3,728,600 people as of January 1, 2021, says the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Year-on-year (y/y) Georgia’s population increased by 0.3%.

It should be mentioned that 2020 resulted in a negative natural increase (-4,017) and positive net migration (15,732)”, said Geostat.

Georgia's urban areas are more populated than rural. 59.4% of the total population live in urban areas and almost one third of the total population (1,202,700 people) live in the capital city of Tbilisi.

Georgia’s population by age and sex

There are more women in Georgia than men. The data revealed there are 1,796,200 men and 1,932,400 women living in Georgia as of January 2021.

Meanwhile, the latest data showed people aged 0-14 made up 20.5% of total population, while the age group of 15-64 made up 64.2%. As for people aged 65 or more they made up 15.2% percent of the total population.

Under the age of 4,  the number of men exceeds that of women, while the opposite situation is observed for the age group of 40 and over, which could be explained by females’ higher life expectancy", said Geostat.

Life expectancy was about 73.4 years in 2020 and this is a decrease of 0.7 compared to the previous year. For men the average life extension was 69.1 years and for women it is 77.7 years.

As of January 1, 2021 the median age of the population equalled 38 years”, said Geostat.

There were 74,264 emigrants (-29.3% y/y) and 89,996 immigrants (-7.1% y/y) in 2020.
