Covid-19 accounted for more than five per cent of deaths in Georgia in 2020

In total 2,587 people died from Covid-19 in 2020, which accounted for more than five per cent of total deaths in Georgia. 

The number of total deaths in Georgia in 2020 amounted to 50,537, while in 2019 this number was 46,659, with a mortality rate per 1,000 persons increased by 1.1%, the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) reports. 

A new cause of death has been added to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2020 named ‘U07.1 - COVID-19, virus identified’. 

About 5,000 people died in Georgia in December 2019, while in the same month of 2020 the number of death amounted to 6,363. 

The main causes of deaths in 2020 were:

  • Diseases of the circulatory system (43.8%)
  • Cancers (16%)
  • Diseases of the respiratory system (7.9%)

At the age of 40 and above the dominant causes of death are cancers and diseases of the circulatory system, the data of Geostat says. 

At the age of 5-39, injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes prevail, as the risk of accidents is relatively higher for these age groups,” says the report. 

The number of deaths in 2020 in Georgia totalled 50,537, with the deaths of 24,326 females and 26,211 males. 

Based on the data of Geostat the highest mortality rate in the last 10 years was observed in 2016 with the deaths of 50,771 people and in 2010 with the deaths of 51,066 people.
