The United National Movement (UNM) opposition party and its supporters will make a human chain in central Tbilisi tomorrow to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the Rose Revolution, a peaceful coup by third president Mikheil Saakashvili and its UNM party back in 2003.

TV anchor and an organiser of the rally Nanuka Zhorzholiani says that the human chain will be made from Freedom Square to Rose Square at 15:00.

We will once again remind the government that we remember the date and we will thank Saakashvili for the peaceful revolution,” Zhorzholiani said.

She stated that the Rose Revolution, which removed second president Eduard Shevardnadze from power, was a ‘milestone’ in Georgian history which gave a push to the country’s western development.

The Georgian Dream government is trying to diminish the importance of the day,” Zhorzholiani said.

Saakashvili, who is now a citizen of Ukraine, was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1 after eight years in political exile.

He says he returned to remove the Georgian Dream from power, accusing the current government of changing the country’s pro-western course.

The former president was transferred to Gori military hospital last week, on his 50th day of hunger strike.

Saakashvili was convicted in Georgia in absentia back in 2018 for abuse of power and was sentenced to six years in prison.

He has also been charged with five other offences, including illegal seizure of property, illegal rally dispersal, embezzlement, abuse of power and illegally crossing the border

Tomorrow is a day-off in Georgia as the country is celebrating Saint George’s Day.
