Health official: Covid-19 in Georgia, worldwide, number one cause of death

Head of Georgia’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze has stated that Covid-19 deaths in the past one week in Georgia and worldwide outnumbered the most common individuals causes of death such as cardiovascular diseases, ischemic heart diseases, stroke and tumors. 

He said that coronavirus daily deaths in Georgia in the past two weeks have stood at 50-60 ‘which is a very high figure for a country with 3.7 million population.’ 

Gamkrelidze stated that Samgori field hospital in Tbilisi will admit Covid-19 patients only after two other field hospitals in Didi Digomi district (for 500 patients) and the other on Kavtaradze street (for 200 patients) in the capital are fully used. 

The two field hospitals are currently used by 40-50 per cent (because of the shortage in the medical personnel),” Gamkrelidze said, adding that resident doctors may be called for field hospitals.

Gamkrelidze also stated that without the vaccination of individuals over 12 it will be difficult to defeat the pandemic. 

Currently in Georgia people over 16 are eligible to be vaccinated. 

Georgia has reported 5,924 new cases of coronavirus, 4,777 recoveries and 60 deaths in the past 24 hours.

57,840 remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia 

6,891 individuals have died from the virus in Georgia so far.

1,010,096 individuals have received at least one dose of the vaccine in the country so far, of which 306,151individuals have been completely vaccinated.
