Georgia has reported 45 new cases of the coronavirus earlier today, which is a record high number after April 16 when 42 cases of coronavirus were detected.

Medical Director of Tbilisi Infectious Disease Hospital Marina Ezugbaia said that out of 45 new cases of coronavirus, 23 were detected in the Adjara region of Georgia and five cases are related to a big wedding in the capital city of Tbilisi.

She said that with the increased number of coronavirus cases Adjara might be declared a ‘red zone’.

The spread of the coronavirus in Georgia has become intense and a controlled increase is being questioned. The morbidity rates in the country have changed in the last two weeks, reaching 8 per 100,000 population. With this figure, the country still remains in the 'green zone', as this incident is less than 10, but 45 new cases have been confirmed in the country for the first time. As for Adjara, it is already a 'red zone'", Ezugbaia said.

Ezugbaia said that three new patients contracted the virus from the cluster of candy shop Dona in Georgia's Black Sea resort town of Batumi, 19 from contact from infected individuals, four are medical workers of Aversi clinic, four cases are ‘imported’ of which one is a truck driver, 12 patients travelled in Adjara and the source of infections has not been identified in the remaining three cases.

The Ministry of Health of Adjara says that three cases were connected to the so-called Khopa market cluster, where mass testing has started today. The market is closed already.

In total, 2,767 persons took PCR tests in the Adjara region during the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the number of recoveries has increased by six, reaching 1,321.

Since February 26, 2020 Georgia has had 1,729 cases of the coronavirus.
