Exports from Georgia hit historic high in 2019

Export from Georgia reached a historic high in 2019, announced the Georgian government earlier today, stating that exports to the EU also reached a record high, with the value of exports increased 12.4 per cent and reaching $3.77 billion, while imports decreased 0.8 per cent, amounting to $9.06 billion.

Exports from Georgia to the EU increased by 13 per cent in 2019 compared to last year and reached $825.7 million which made for 21.9 per cent of total exports.

In 2019, Georgia generated unprecedented income from exporting wine to the amount of $223 million. The export of wine increased by 13.2 per cent compared to the previous year. Also, the export of nuts increased by 10.6 per cent and reached $67 million.

It is worth mentioning that Georgia hit an unprecedented volume of clothes exports, the value of which amounted to $56.9 million in 2019, which is 53.2 per cent more compared to last year.

Other export products in which Georgia experienced a significant y/y increase in 2019 are the following:

  • Still and mineral waters - $133.5 million (21.2 per cent increase)
  • Citrus fruits - $21 million (44.4 per cent increase)
  • Peaches, apricots, cherries  and plums - $13 million (53.2 per cent increase)
  • Apples, pears and quinces - $5 million (210 per cent increase).

The export of spices hit a historic high and amounted to $11 million in 2019 which is 24.7 per cent more compared to last year.

The Georgian trade deficit in 2019 decreased by $489 million and came out to $5.29 billion which is 41.2 per cent of total trade turnover.
