Georgian protected areas to be announced among UNESCO World Heritage sites

The Georgian forests are soon to be announced among the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage sites.

The Georgian Agency of Protected Areas (APA), together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is now working to promote the following Georgian national parks and areas:

  • Machakhela, Mtirala and Colchian National Parks;
  • Kintrishi and Kobuleti protected areas.

This means that the sites that have huge local importance for Georgians, will receive even more special cultural or physical significance worldwide.

Up to now Gelati Monastery, the historical monuments of Mtskheta and upper Svaneti have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
