$10 mln programme kicks off to strengthen management, financial stability of 12 protected areas in Georgia

Twelve protected areas in Georgia will receive support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to strengthen their management and financial sustainability, which will help the country conserve and protect its unique biodiversity, the UNDP and the Georgian Environmental Ministry say.
The five-year programme will be carried out by the Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF) and the National Agency of the Georgian Protected Areas.
The programme budget is $10 million,” the UNDP says.
The financial contribution is as follows:
- GEF funding- $1.8 million
- Georgian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture- $4.8 million.
- CNF- $3.1 million.
- Bank of Georgia- $200,000.
Machakhela National Park: Agency of Protected Area of Georgia.
UNDP head in Georgia Louisa Vinton stated that “without biological diversity, there is no other life on Earth, including our own”.
With plants and animals disappearing across the globe at alarming rates, protected areas are our unique resource to conserve and restore ecosystems and ensure the survival of the planet”, she stated.
Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia Iuri Nozadze said that the programme is “particularly important.”
Currently, eight percent of the country’s territory is under formal protection and this number is expected to increase to 20 per cent in the next eight years. We are pleased to join efforts with our international partners and business companies to make Georgia’s protected areas more efficient and sustainable,” he said.
The 12 protected areas which will receive technical assistance and consultative support within the programme are:
- Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park.
- Lagodekhi Protected Areas.
- Vashlovani Protected Areas.
- Tusheti Protected Areas.
- Tusheti Protected Landscape.
- Mtirala National Park.
- Javakheti National Park.
- Kazbegi National Park.
- Algeti National Park.
- Kintrishi Protected Areas.
- Machakhela National Park.
- Pshav-Khevsureti Protected Areas.
Georgia’s protected areas are becoming popular tourist spots, hosting 55,490 in the first quarter of 2018, announces Georgia’s Agency of Protected Areas. This year the number of guests visiting Georgia’s protected areas increased by 39 percent compared to the same quarter of 2017, statistics show.
A total of 954,397 guests visited Georgia’s protected in 2017, a 30 percent hike in comparison to 2016, announces Georgia’s Agency of Protected Areas.
The Georgian forests are soon to be announced among the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage sites. This means that the sites that have huge local importance for Georgians, will receive even more special cultural or physical significance worldwide.
Protected areas in Georgia have hosted 974,827 visitors in January-September, which is a 14% increase in comparison to the same period of last year. More than half (52%) of total visitors were Georgians.
A new ecotourism attraction, a hanging rope park, will be set up in Georgia’s Algeti National Park, located in Georgia’s Tetritskharo municipality.
A 240-meter long glass bridge will be built at Dashbashi Canyon, in Georgia’s Tsalka region, where about $60 million will be invested, announces the Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia.
Georgia's picturesque Tusheti National Park, a protected area across hills of the southern slopes of the Caucasus mountain chain, has been designated among the World Monuments Fund's list of 25 at-risk heritage locations across the world.
