A mountain village in Georgia’s extreme north-east will host a launch event next week for a series of showcases bringing photographic art to the South Caucasian provinces and countryside.

In Omalo, a village of the country’s picturesque highland Tusheti province, Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum will organise a photo show introducing work of contemporary photographers to locals and tourists.

Organisers from the museum said they would display a slideshow of selected photographers while also presenting the legacy of Shalva Alkhanaidze, a celebrated 20th century photographer with local roots.

The founding of the Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum was inspired by the work of 19th century pioneering photographer and museum founder Alexandre Roinashvili (seated, third from left in a dark suit).

Apart from being introduced to the exhibits, visitors will be able to hear a public talk within the event, all scheduled to take place on July 28.

A preview from the Tbilisi museum said the show was aimed at bringing knowledge and appreciation of contemporary photography to remote locations in Georgia and other countries of the region.

Over the recent years, development of photographic scene has been limited to capital cities of the South Caucasus.
[The museum] aims to make the most recent work of contemporary photography of the world available to audiences in provinces of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia as well”, read the summary of the display.

Following the Tusheti display there are plans for shows in locations including the Pankisi Valley and the Tserovani settlement of internally displaced persons in Georgia.

The Omalo event is part of the project South Caucasus Photography Hub for Education and Innovation, financed by the Swiss Cooperation South Caucasus.

The Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum was founded earlier this year and is inspired by the late 19th century Travelling Museum of the Caucasus, which brought exhibits of the South Caucasian cultural heritage to various locations throughout the region.
