German Ambassador highlights Georgia’s EU integration progress

Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, on Tuesday highlighted Georgia’s “significant progress” in rapprochement with the European Union and called for progress in the implementation of the steps outlined by the European Commission for opening accession talks with the country.
In his remarks, Fischer noted his recommendation was for the country to achieve the progress in the process “as quickly as possible”.
He noted the importance of the task before summer, when elections for the European Parliament are scheduled.
The diplomat also reviewed amendments to the member election regulations of the Central Election Commission of Georgia by saying it was “up to Georgians to find a solution” in the process.
Guðni Jóhannesson, the President of Iceland who is on a visit to Georgia, on Tuesday said he welcomed the country’s desire to join the “Euro-Atlantic alliance” and vowed his country’s support for the process.
Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday dismissed calls by some members of the European Parliament for release of the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili by saying Georgia was “not a country to be looked down on”.
Irakli Beraia, the Chair of the Defence and Security Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, on Monday said the ongoing war in Ukraine was a “continuation” of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Georgia in 2008 and a “result of the failure of the international community” to “hold the aggressor accountable” at that time.
Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Monday said there were “opportunities” for a “gradual integration” of Georgia into the European Union.
Paweł Herczyński, the Ambassador of the European Union, on Wednesday said Georgia’s domestic business environment would “only improve” as the country edged closer to EU membership.
Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, and Guðni Jóhannesson, the President of Iceland who is on a visit to the country, on Wednesday discussed prospective directions of cooperation between the two states.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party in the Parliament, on Wednesday said it was “doubly regrettable” to see reports of an appearance of Zurab Adeishvili, the wanted former Prosecutor General and Justice Minister of Georgia, in the German Parliament.
Relations between Iceland and Georgia and prospects of future cooperation were discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Guðni Jóhansson, the President of Iceland.

The European Union Delegation to Georgia on Friday said media reports on the visit of Zurab Adeishvili, the wanted former Prosecutor General and Justice Minister of Georgia under the previous United National Movement Government, to European Union institutions on Tuesday had portrayed circumstances “in another way” and represented “disinformation”.
