The humanitarian situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) and human rights violations were discussed on Monday in a meeting between the country’s Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Held on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations Human Rights Council 55th session, the meeting highlighted the “significant role” of the High Commissioner and his office “in a time full of challenges”, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

Darchiashvili emphasised the importance of maintaining the topic of the humanitarian situation in the Russian-occupied regions “high on the UN’s agenda”, and noted the necessity of allowing international monitoring mechanisms in the occupied territories.
The officials pointed out the role of the UN in peaceful conflict resolution and in protecting the rights of the citizens affected by the conflicts, while also highlighting the importance of a resolution at the Human Rights Council reaffirming the body’s commitment to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.
The Georgian official highlighted the Geneva International Discussions on the topics and the “special role” of the UN in the process, and extended his invitation to Türk to visit the country.
