Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Friday said the decision of the European Council to grant the country the bloc’s membership candidate status the previous day was the result of the Government's “hard work” per the interests of the Georgian people.
In his comments to the media, he stressed it was a “very challenging but important work”, which “has brought concrete results”.
Darchiashvili also noted the Council’s decision provided “a political guarantee” to the country to become a full-fledged member of the European Union.
The European Commission on November 8 recommended the Council to grant the EU candidate status to Georgia.
Georgia officially applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022, shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, after accelerating the initial plan to submit the membership application by 2024.
