Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said the Georgian Government had “successfully achieved” the “first of two paramount steps” on the country’s European Union membership path.
“Out of two paramount steps on the EU membership path, we have successfully achieved the first one - Georgia obtained EU candidate status”, Papuashvili said in a social media message.

The official stressed the “well-deserved decision” of the European Council to grant the country the status last week was a testament to “our unwavering commitment and steady progress”.
[The outcome was a conclusion to us] successfully navigating through this journey. Now, we look forward to steering our nation toward the second paramount step - full-fledged EU membership”, the chief Georgian legislator concluded.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday highlighted the “fulfilment of the dream of many generations” in the country being granted the status, in his end-of-year report summarising the work of his Government.
Garibashvili noted the path toward the outcome had been ”not easy”, and cited the “period full of many challenges” in the run-up to the European Council’s decision.
