Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Thursday congratulated Georgian people on “this historic day” - being granted the European Union membership candidate status.
In his social media post, Darchiashvili said “today’s decision is an explicit recognition of Georgia's aspirations, its striving for many years and the progress achieved”, and stressed the Government’s will “to make Georgia’s civilisational choice a reality remains unchanged”.

In his comments to the media, Papuashvili said the European Council had “appreciated [Georgia's progress] and made a fair decision” regarding Georgia. He congratulated Ukraine and Moldova on the Council’s decision to open accession negotiations with the EU.
Recently Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has congratulated Georgian people on being granted the EU candidate status, following the European Council President Charles Michel’s post announcing the Council’s decision on Georgia’s candidacy.
