Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Thursday said the European Union member states “unequivocally” supported granting Georgia the bloc membership candidate status.
In her interview with Imedi TV channel, Botchorishvili noted there was “no discordance” between the European Commission’s recommendation of November on Georgia’s candidacy and the position of the EU on the matter.
The Committee Chair emphasised the importance of the decision on granting Georgia the status, “both for Georgia, [...] and for the EU itself”, noting the decision of the bloc’s leaders would “determine what the EU will be like in the future”.
The [EU] leaders consider any issue related to the future expansion of the bloc with special care and attention. [...] However, one thing is the fact that all EU member states are in favour of enlargement”, Botchorishvili said.
The ongoing European Council summit will address the enlargement package on Friday and will announce the final decision on Georgia’s EU candidacy, as well as on opening accession negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova, and Bosnia and Herzegovina during the two-day summit.
