Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Thursday vowed his support for Georgia’s European Union membership candidate status, ahead of the European Council’s anticipated decision on Friday.

Orbán told the media the country’s candidacy bid had been “decided”, and further added “everyone here loves Georgia”.

The head of the Hungarian Government also demanded that Ukraine’s EU membership be taken off the agenda of the summit.

Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, last week said the Hungarian Government was “firmly supporting” the granting of the membership candidate status to Georgia by the Council.

On his visit to Georgia in October, hailed by the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili as “historic”, Orbán said his Government was “very disappointed and angry” at the Council’s 2022 decision not to grant Georgia the status while Ukraine and Moldova - the states he said had been “far behind” in terms of their qualifications - received positive outcomes in the decision.
