French Ambassador says Georgia “belongs to European family”, hopes for positive decision on EU candidacy

Sheraz Gasri, the French Ambassador to Georgia, on Monday said the European Union had “opened the door” for Georgia to receive the bloc’s membership candidate status.

In her remarks over the matter, Gasri said she hoped the country, which she said “belongs to the European family”, would be able to take an “important step” next week when the European Council is scheduled to make a decision on whether to grant it the status. 

The French diplomat stressed it was “important” that “all Georgian political forces and civil society” worked for the “long-term goal”, which she said required “uniting forces in the long-term perspective”.

Gasri also highlighted the significance of “constructive and inclusive” work to realise the “European aspirations” of Georgian citizens.
